Modern root canals are far more comfortable than their reputation suggests. Local anesthesia keeps the procedure virtually pain-free, and most patients report little to no discomfort during treatment. What actually hurts is the infection itself, which is why relief usually arrives once the infected pulp is removed. Mild soreness for a day or two afterward is normal.

Severe throbbing pain, especially when chewing, is the classic sign. Others include lingering pain from hot drinks or cold air, swollen or tender gums, and a tooth that is darkening. Some infected teeth cause no pain at all and only turn up on an X-ray. A comprehensive exam with digital X-rays is the only way to be sure.

Most root canals are completed in one or two visits, plus a follow-up for the crown. The first appointment covers the exam, X-rays, and cleaning and sealing the canals. A custom crown is placed at a later visit to restore the strength and appearance of the tooth. Complicated cases with multiple canals may need extra time.
